Markets by MP
My TSX and US stocks in one place, in Canadian dollars.
What it is
Markets shows my TSX and US stocks together, in Canadian dollars: live US prices, today’s change, total return, allocation and a chart of the whole portfolio. It installs on a phone or computer like a regular app, walks new users through getting a free data key, and keeps keys and holdings in the browser. Visitors without a key see a demo portfolio.
It started as a local Python and SQLite app, became a web app called Investing Tracker, and is now Markets by MP.
How it works
- Live US prices come from Finnhub’s free plan, about once a minute.
- Toronto prices and daily history come from Alpha Vantage, which allows 25 requests a day, so the app saves them and only asks when it needs to.
- The USD to CAD rate comes from Frankfurter, which needs no key.
- The maths (value, return, allocation and the portfolio chart) lives in one module with its own tests.
- Everything is saved in your own browser. Nothing goes to a server of mine.
How I’m building it
- Test live US prices with a free Finnhub key.
- Install it on my phone and check it works offline.
- Open it up here once it’s ready.

How I build
I decide what each app should do, use AI coding tools to write the code faster, then review, test and fix each change.
What I learned
Coming soon. I’ll write up what building Markets taught me and share it on LinkedIn.
